Partnering with OCAC for a Kids' Valentine workshop was such a blast of LOVE! The kids enjoyed making hand-stamped letters and various folded valentines to give away! We also made simple-form books and even envelops for their cards. There were also two small presses to letterpress for extra fun and to add small phrases in their cards! C.E.S. Wood is a prominent figure in Portland history, and a fierce advocate for equal rights. We were proud to champion his legacy at the Celebration of the Swearing In Ceremony for New Commissioner Chloe Eudaly; only the 8th woman to serve on the Portland City Commission.
The IPRC community supports all people, of all types and origins. IPRC connected with some local business owners -Lisa Mangum and Jason Leivian - who wanted a positive message of acceptance to hang in their store front windows. The result is the 'We Welcome' broadside.
The response from the community here in Portland and beyond has been very warm and generous. We has likely shipped around 2000 of these posted in the past few months, and they are free to take from the IPRC with a suggested donation. They are seen all over Portland, and even hanging in car windows and residences. The power of the press is in full effect with this one, and seeing such support for such a positive message only encourages us to continue. Reclamation: Essays, by Justin Hocking is a chapbook released at the end of 2016. Letterpress printed cover and dust-jacket, designed by Wheelhouse.
Literary Arts hosts the annual Wordstock Book Festival at the Portland Art Museum. For the past two years, in partnership with the IPRC, we have supported the event with an interactive printing demonstration at the Book Fair. Their 2016 logo was a book inspired umbrella, so we made some rain using lead-type punctuation and created this fun design. It sure was raining that day, and seeing everyone's smiling faces was all we needed to get through the day. Hope to see you all there next year!
Chloe Eudaly is running for City Commissioner and asked Wheelhouse bring a small letterpress demo to their final fundraising event before the big election in November! Remember to get out and vote! The theme of the evening was Halloween, and the costumes were all very creative. Eudaly would be the eighth women to represent Portland on the City Commission; she is also the only woman running this year, the only single parent running, the only renter running, and the only candidate currently living on the East-side of Portland. We support her and you should too!
Open School is a student focused alternative school. Wheelhouse, in partnership with the IPRC, was happy to support their mission and celebrate the Grand Opening of their newest location - Open School East. . "You are my other Me." is an excerpt from a poem written by Luis Valdez. During this event demonstration we were able to share the craft of letterpress, while giving each attendee a free take home poster (printed by them!).
Working with Ravyn to complete this project has been such a joy. Her project has been published in a larger run, and we are still happily promoting her first book release. Printed with handset type and photopolymer plates.
Gallery is a short story by Justin Hocking. Handset lead type and photo-polymer letterpress printed and designed by Wheelhouse.
